Motorcycle Maintenance Tips for Beginners

If you’ve picked up a motorcycle from our new motorcycles inventory or used motorcycles inventory, you may be wondering how to keep it in tip top shape. It can be daunting for new riders to think about all that’s needed to maintain a motorcycle, but that’s where Beaverton Motorcycles can help.

Beaverton and Tigard area motorcycle owners can count on us to bring you the best possible maintenance tips, as well as plenty of hands-on service at our Beaverton service department. Here are some motorcycle maintenance tips for beginners:

Change The Oil

Just like a car, you’re going to want to keep your motor oil in check. You’ll need to change the oil after several thousand miles, but check your owner’s manual to be sure. If you’d like to change the oil yourself, follow these steps:

-Ride the bike for about five minutes to warm it up

-Turn the engine off and stand the bike upright

-Remove the oil fill plug, drain plug and oil filter

-Once the oil is drained, install a new oil filter and put back any removed parts

-Refill using a funnel and proper amount/type of motorcycle oil

-Replace the oil fill cap and recycle the used oil

Maintain Tire Pressure and Tread

It’s in your and your motorcycle’s best interest to stay on top of tire pressure. To check the tire pressure, locate the valve stem on the inside of the wheel, remove the cap and press an air pressure gauge onto the valve stem.

Use an air compressor to fill the tire to the correct PSI, and replace the valve stem cap when finished. To inspect your tire tread, check the tire’s wear indicator, which is a little rubber knob in the grooves of the tire. If the knob is at the same level of rubber that meets the road, you need a new tire.

Replace the Air Filter

Your motorcycle’s air filter keeps debris out of your engine, and if left unchecked, will negatively affect your performance. The location of the air filter may vary depending on your model, but once you do get to it, take out and replace the air filter if needed.
